L’eremo [The Hermitage]Vincenzo Lucchesi (1864 – 1940)

In the 1930s, Luccesi, a former officer of the courts, moved from Rome to a farm close to Viterbo. In the woods surrounding his property he erected what he called his “hermitage;” a park of widely-varying characters, including dancers, monks, and police. These were created out of mannequins and the painted trunks of trees, and were surrounded and enhanced by numerous painted signs with Goliardic slogans. (The Goliards were a group of wandering students in medieval Europe who composed satirical Latin poetry. Known for their conviviality, licentiousness, and ribaldry, most of their verses were directed against the church.)

The installation is no longer extant.
