About the Artist/Site
In an array of colorful, graphic metal signage installed throughout the roadside of his family’s farm property, David Nemechek demanded answers for injustices perpetrated against his family due to perceived racism regarding their Czech heritage. The striking signs accused the local government and law enforcement of Noble County, Oklahoma, of harassment, conspiracy, and the mutilation of their cattle.
In the early 1990s, a sheriff named on more than a dozen signs (Ron McGee) filed a libel lawsuit against Nemechek and was awarded $775,000. Much of Nemechek’s farm equipment was auctioned off in an attempt to collect the judgement; however, Nemechek did not take down his signs, and at least some signage remained in place until 2020.
