About the Artist/Site

At the heart of the Loire Valley, honored by UNESCO as an international world heritage site, is a cave environment created between 1989 and 1994. Sculpted from the local stone by Jacques Warminski, the carvings extend both above and below ground level, providing a true voyage into the heart of the earth. This monumental and majestic work is composed of labyrinthine sculpted galleries and an open-air sculpted amphitheater – which they call an Amphi-Sculpture – that affords various openings into the sunken spaces. The difference in sensation between the shadow and coolness of the grottoes and the heat and light of the amphitheater is remarkable.

Exhibitions and concerts are held here, and classes in stone sculpture are available upon prior request. The site is open year-round for public visitation: May through September from 11 am to 8 pm daily; October to April from 2 to 6 pm weekends and school holidays.
